When Cadbury’s launched their Dairy Milk chocolate in 1905, there was a tremendous increase in demand. The first Cadbury milk condensing factory was built at Knighton, Staffordshire and in 1915, a second factory was built at Frampton-on-Severn, Gloucestershire, right in the heart of dairy country. Both plants were alongside canals which allowed economical transportation to Bournville. Milk was brought in from surrounding farms. The churns were left on landing stages and collected twice daily. On Midsummer’s Day, 1986, newly restored GWR ‘City’ Class No. 3440 ‘CITY OF TRURO,’ stands at Highley station, on the Severn Valley Railway, with a train from Bridgnorth to Bewdley. Designed by William Dean, the Great Western ‘City’ Class locomotives first appeared in 1903. ‘City of Truro’, the subject of the painting, was built in 1903 and is reputed to be the first locomotive in the world to reach a speed of over 100 m.p.h.
